Why Most Fundraising Problems Aren’t Actually Fundraising Problems
Summary:
Many nonprofits try to solve fundraising challenges by launching new campaigns, rewriting appeals, or experimenting with new marketing tactics. Sometimes those efforts work—but often the results remain inconsistent.
In this session, Javan Van Gronigen explores why many fundraising challenges aren’t actually fundraising problems. Instead, they stem from gaps in the structures that support fundraising inside an organization.
Using a simple framework—strategy, systems, and execution—this talk helps nonprofit leaders see how sustainable growth happens. Strategy provides clarity about audiences, messaging, and how supporters engage. Systems provide the tools and processes that allow teams to consistently execute that strategy. Execution is the visible work: campaigns, outreach, and fundraising activity.
Participants will learn how to identify where their organization may be relying too heavily on execution while underinvesting in strategy or systems. Through practical examples and simple diagnostic questions, attendees will leave with a clearer way to evaluate their fundraising efforts and strengthen the foundations that support long-term growth.
Following the session, Javan will host an informal roundtable conversation on emerging tools like AI, exploring how nonprofits are beginning to use new technologies to support fundraising, communications, and donor engagement.
